Gavilan earns first win, 2-1 over Redwoods

GILROY – The Gavilan College men's soccer team struck for a pair of goals over a two-minute span and the defense was able to hold on for a 2-1 non-conference win over visiting College of the Redwoods on Saturday.

After some tough early-season losses, the Rams picked up their first win to move to 1-3 overall.

Edisson Torres got the Rams on the board first with his goal in the 25th minute off the assist from Mekhi David. Just two minutes later, Ryan Koontz broke through to score in the 27th minute with the assist from Darren Hernandez to give Gavilan a 2-0 lead.

The Rams took the two-goal advantage into the second half before Redwoods cut it in half by scoring the 51st minute. But the Gavilan defense was able to hold on the rest of the way for the win. Emiliano De Anda Garcia earned the victory in goal and posted 2 saves.

Gavilan will look to build on the momentum when the Rams return to action on Tuesday (Sep. 9) to take on Contra Costa College on the road at 6 p.m.
