Gavilan earns first win, 2-1 over Redwoods

GILROY – The Gavilan College men's soccer team struck for a pair of goals over a two-minute span and the defense was able to hold on for a 2-1 non-conference win over visiting College of the Redwoods on Saturday.

After some tough early-season losses, the Rams picked up their first win to move to 1-3 overall.

Edisson Torres got the Rams on the board first with his goal in the 25^th minute off the assist from Mekhi David. Just two minutes later, Ryan Koontz broke through to score in the 27^th minute with the assist from Darren Hernandez to give Gavilan a 2-0 lead.

The Rams took the two-goal advantage into the second half before Redwoods cut it in half by scoring the 51^st minute. But the Gavilan defense was able to hold on the rest of the way for the win. Emiliano De Anda Garcia earned the victory in goal and posted 2 saves.

Gavilan will look to build on the momentum when the Rams return to action on Tuesday (Sep. 9) to take on Contra Costa College on the road at 6 p.m.
