Rams edge Redwoods for opening-day win

GILROY – The Gavilan College women's soccer team officially kicked off the 2025 season with an exciting 1-0 win over visiting College of the Redwoods on Friday at home.

The match was a defensive battle despite a combined 20 shots on goal that remained scoreless all the way until the 79th minute. That's when freshman Evelyn Palominos finally broke through and knocked in what proved to be the game-winning goal off the assist from sophomore Gabriela Jimenez.

Freshman goalkeeper Izzabela Villanueva was up to the challenge and came up with 8 saves in her Gavilan debut to preserve the shutout.

Gavilan, now 1-0 to begin the season, is back in action on Tuesday (Sep. 9) when the Rams host Contra Costa College in a 4 p.m. non-conference game.
