Rams rally for 3-2 walkoff win over Skyline
GILROY — Mateo Alcantar's two-out, walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted the Gavilan College Rams to a 3-2 victory over Skyline College on Friday at home.
The Rams, who had trailed since the eighth inning, rallied for two runs, including the game-winner with two outs, in the final frame to secure the comeback win. Anthony Dela Cruz started the rally with a one-out pinch-hit single, and a walk to Jesus Castro put runners on first and second base. Orlando Lewis tied the game with an RBI single, then Alcantar delivered the winner one batter later.
Skyline had taken the lead in the top of the eighth on a Jacob DuFrene RBI triple and a Brayden Smith run-scoring double, erasing a 1-0 Gavilan advantage that had stood since the fifth.
Gavilan starter Mason Pound was sharp in his starting effort, holding Skyline scoreless over 6 2/3 innings on four hits and five strikeouts. Brayden Martinez relieved and took the win after closing out the final 2 1/3 innings.
Lewis paced the Gavilan offense, going 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Alcantar also finished 2-for-4 with the decisive hit.
The win snapped a three-game losing skid for the Rams and improved the squad to 8-11 overall. Gavilan returns to action on Tuesday (Mar. 10) when it opens a three-game Coast Conference series at home against Ohlone College at 2:30 p.m.
